Story
Unfinished Business: 5 Events, 1 Year, and the Road to Swansea 70.3
For me, 2026 is about redemption.
In 2023, after nearly two years of training for my first Ironman 70.3 in Swansea, I fell ill at the last minute. I had to pull out. I also had to cancel Tenby later that year. It was unfinished business that has been sitting with me ever since.
This year, I’m back. But I’m not just racing for a medal; I’m racing for a service that keeps our community alive.
Living in Whitchurch, Cardiff, the reality of the Air Ambulance is impossible to ignore. I see the helicopters flying in and out of UHW way too often.
Whether it’s a competitor in a sportive, a road accident victim, or someone suffering a heart attack in a remote hamlet (something I have witnessed personally), the Air Ambulance is often the only difference between life and death.
As a business owner (Hopp Studio), life can be stressful. Running and cycling have always been my mental health outlets. But participating in events like sportives and marathons exposes you to the dangers of the environment. I’ve seen people need help. I know that people like me—and people like you—need the Wales Air Ambulance to exist.
I’m committing to a full year of endurance events to support this cause:
🏃♂️ January: Lliswerry 8 Mile Road Run
🏃♂️ March: Rome Marathon (Full 26.2 miles)
🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️ July: IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea (The Main Event: 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run)
🚴♂️ September: Cardiff to Llanelli Bike Ride (Official WAA event)
🏃♂️ October: Cardiff Half Marathon
Rachel, my wife, is also running Rome and Cardiff with me to help boost my energy and motivation.
Where will the money go? The Wales Air Ambulance is a charity, funded by people like you. It requires huge sums to stay airborne. Here is exactly what your donation pays for:
£48 buys one week’s subscription to crucial flight planning software.
£195 is the cost just to launch the helicopter once.
£1,950 buys a single crew helmet.
£3,545 covers the cost of one complete lifesaving mission.
I’m putting in the miles, the early mornings, and the training hours. I’m asking you to help keep the fuel in the tank.
If you can sponsor a "take-off" (£195), fantastic. If you can buy an hour of aftercare support (£31), amazing. Every single pound goes directly to saving lives across Wales, 24/7.
Thank you for your support. It means the world to me, and it means life to someone else.

Wales Air Ambulance Charity
What we do:
Wales Air Ambulance delivers advanced lifesaving medical care to people across Wales, 24/7. We are the only air ambulance charity, based in, and dedicated to, the people of Wales and rely entirely on your charitable donations to raise £11.2 million every year to keep the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.
We are on standby to attend those suffering a life or limb-threatening injury or illness, with some of the most advanced air ambulances and rapid response vehicles in the UK. Our Charity is delivered via a unique Third Sector and Public Sector Partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board our vehicles.
With bases across Wales, the highly skilled crew on board can carry out medical procedures which would usually only be available within a hospital setting. They can deliver blood transfusions, administer anaesthesia and undertake emergency operations at the scene of an incident, before taking the patient directly to specialist care. For the patient, this can mean hours saved in receiving the appropriate treatment when compared to standard care.
As a pan-Wales service, our dedicated crews will travel the length and breadth of Wales to deliver emergency lifesaving care. We are an all-Wales Charity, on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is our vision to improve the lives of patients and their families by being a world leader in advanced, time-critical care.
Why join our team?
Making a lifesaving difference with every stroke, stride or step.
By choosing to support our charity, you are making a lifesaving difference, ensuring that our patients are reunited with their loved ones after the worst day of their lives. Without you, our fundraisers, we simply wouldn’t exist, and your commitment to raising awareness and funds for us ensures that we can protect your community in the future. Every time you see one of our helicopters or rapid response vehicles, you can be proud knowing that you’ve played your part in the effort to deliver critical care to those in need across Wales.
What we will gain from your fundraising efforts is invaluable, and for that we cannot thank you enough!
